Services Performed
- Vehicle feels under powered under load. The shop in colorado put a aftermarket catalytic converter on it. Brians said they cant tell them anything until cat is replaced. Shop that replaced cat performed a back pressure test and said it had one pound BP.
- For driveability concern, the technician loaded fuel trim tables, and found fuel trims on both banks are skewed negative across the board at all RPM and throttle positions. The ECM does have control of the fuel system, though, so that tells us the oxygen sensors are okay. The technician performed a volumetric efficiency test, which showed there is an airflow problem with the engine. He was unable to perform catalyst efficiency test, as this vehicle adheres to OBD1 protocols, so there are no downstream oxygen sensors. This is why the other shop thought they couldn't communicate, as scan tool cannot automatically pull the VIN, even though it is a 2004. Performed an exhaust system backpressure test and found over 7psi before catalyst on snap throttle in the bay. After the cat, there is less than 2psi on the same snap throttle test. This indicates the catalytic converter is restricted, and needs to be replaced. Additionally, the MAF sensor is over reporting air flow into the engine, which is causing the incorrect fuel trims. These could be contributing to damaging the cat as well. Recommending replacement of the MAF sensor. Recommending tune-up as well, due to mileage.
